Six cities have been selected to host games during the 2027 Men’s World Handball Championship in Germany, with Berlin a notable omission.

Games will be played in Munich (SAP Garden, 11,000 capacity), Stuttgart (Porsche Arena, 6,200 capacity), Magdeburg (Getec Arena, 6,500 capacity), Kiel (Wunderino Arena, 10,250 capacity), Hannover (ZAG-Arena, 10,000 capacity) and Cologne (Lanxess Arena, 19,250 capacity).

The event will take place from January 14-31, 2027 and will feature 32 national teams.

SAP Garden, Munich’s new 11,500-capacity arena which opened last month, will host the opening game of the tournament. Lanxess Arena (pictured) will host the quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches.

Andreas Michelmann, president of the German Handball Association (DHB), said: “With this tournament we are visiting the whole of Germany. These venues combine many of the things that define us: They are centres of the Bundesliga, they stand for tradition, but – like Munich with the new SAP Garden – also for modernity. With this great infrastructure, we are ready for another highlight in the decade of handball.”

Germany also hosted this year’s Men’s European Handball Championship, with Lanxess Arena staging the final between France and Denmark. The opening match of the tournament between Germany and Switzerland took place at Düsseldorf’s Merkur-Spiel-Arena and attracted a crowd of 53,586, which marked a new world record attendance for handball.

Lanxess Arena is the only EHF Euro 2024 venue that will be used during the 2027 World Championship. Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena (now Uber Arena), Hamburg’s Barclays Arena, Mannheim’s SAP Arena and Munich’s Olympiahalle were all used during EHF Euro 2024 but have not been selected for the 2027 event.

Over one million fans attended games during EHF Euro 2024, which featured 24 teams.

In April, the International Handball Federation awarded hosting rights for the 2029 and 2031 editions of the Men’s and Women’s World Championships.

France and Germany will co-host the men’s event in 2029, while Denmark, Norway and Iceland will co-host the 2031 edition. Spain will host the women’s competition in 2029, while the 2031 edition will be co-hosted by Czech Republic and Poland.

The 2025 men’s tournament had already been assigned to Croatia, Denmark and Norway. The 2025 women’s event will be held in Germany and the Netherlands, while Hungary will host the 2027 women’s edition.
