India’s national cricket team will play its first-ever match at Gwalior’s new Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in October.
The T20 match between India and Bangladesh had initially been due to take place at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium, but the venue is currently undergoing renovation work.
The match will instead take place at Gwalior’s new stadium, which has a capacity of 30,000 and opened in June. It will mark India’s first match in Gwalior since a one-day international fixture against South Africa in 2010.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced a further swap of venues for the first and second T20 matches against England in January. Chennai had originally been due to host the first match but it will now stage the second, with Kolkata stepping in to host the opening fixture.
The dates of January 22 and January 25 will remain the same for the England matches. The venue change has been deemed necessary following a request from Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal regarding their prior Republic Day commitments and obligations.
Bangladesh’s tour of India will also include Test matches in Chennai from September 19-23 and Kanpur from September 27 to October 1. After the T20 match in Gwalior on October 6, two more are scheduled in Delhi on October 9 and Hyderabad on October 12.
England’s tour of India will include five T20 matches in total, with fixtures in Rajkot, Pune and Mumbai to follow the aforementioned matches in Chennai and Kolkata. England and India will also face off in three one-day internationals in February in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad.
Pakistan match goes behind closed doors
In other news, the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that its second Test match against Bangladesh from August 30 to September 3 will be held without fans due to ongoing construction work at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium.
The stadium is being renovated ahead of next year’s ICC Champions Trophy, which will be the first ICC event hosted by Pakistan since 1996. Ticket sales have been suspended with immediate effect, and fans who have already purchased tickets will receive a full refund automatically.
In a statement, the PCB said: “While we deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause, we want to assure our valued fans that the ongoing stadium upgrades are aimed at enhancing their experience.”
